Tribology (which is the study of friction, wear, and lubrication) has emerged as one of the fields that contribute to sustainable development through environmentally friendly solutions. These solutions are aimed to reduce energy consumption by lowering power losses during sliding applications. Power losses at sliding interfaces can be diminished by reducing the abrasive and adhesive nature of hard metal asperity interactions. One way to reduce friction losses is using high-performance polymer coatings (HPPCs) as interacting (sliding) surfaces (tribopairs). It has been shown that HPPCs based on polyether ether ketone (PEEK), polytet- rafluoroethylene (PTFE), and aromatic thermosetting copolyester (ATSP) blended with solid lubricants can withstand high bearing loads and provide self-lubrication. |
