description Wastewater treatments involving floating macrophytes have proven efficient in the remediation of water containing nutrients, organic matter and toxic substances such as arsenic, zinc, cadmium, copper, lead, chromium, and mercury. Its importance lies in its ability to be used in rural areas due to its low conventional energy consumption and the practicality in the assembly and operation of treatment systems. Even so, the processes that take place in the purification of sewage with floating macrophytes have not yet been clarified. This article intends to take a tour of the existing literature on floating macrophytes, identifying the general aspects, advantages and disadvantages of using these plants to purify wastewater. Similarly, the most relevant background is identified since the beginning of this application. Design models with macrophytes and generally accepted criteria will be described, rigorously reviewing the removal efficiencies of different species of floating macrophytes. Finally, current perspectives and future challenges for the development of this technique will be addressed as analyzed.

Finally, current perspectives and future challenges for the development of this technique will be addressed as analyzed.
