Un viaje por el Putumayo y el Amazonas : ensayo de navegación ; relaciones interesantes y datos históricos sobre las misiones católicas : del Caquetá y Putumayo desde el año 1632 hasta el presente

El 17 de diciembre de 1885, queriendo restablecer mi salud quebrantada con las tareas del año, y deseando huír por unos catorce días de los microbos, miasmas y fetidez que difunden en contorno los numerosos muladares y cloacas al aire libre de esta capital, morada de políticos, publicistas y poetas inmortales, areópago de ilustres laureados, templo de ruidosas apoteosis y teatro de triunfales recibimientos, salí de Bogotá con dirección á Peñalisa. Ninguna otra capital de la América española posee en el corto radio de doce leguas tántas bellezas naturales como las que disfruta Bogotá... En el capítulo anterior hemos hecho una rápida descripción pintoresca de nuestro paseo á Peñalisa ; en este nos ocuparemos principalmente de la parte geografía, herizando un poco el papel con algunas cifras insoportables á los poetas y literatos de artículos de costumbres; más sumamente provechosos para el verdadero adelanto material del país... No nos hagamos ilusión, es vergonzoso para el Gobierno colonial y, aun mucho más para el de la República, el no haber hecho aun una vía carretera desde la rica Sabana de Bogotá hasta las márgenes de la primera arteria de Colombia... Para hacer estimar de mis compatriotas los tesoros inexhaustos que encierran las tierras calientes de Colombia, citaré algunos ligeros rasgos acerca de su fauna (animales) y de su flora, (vegetales) tomándolos de sabios extranjeros (Mr. Saffray, Wyse, Creveaux, André y Reclus)... La cordillera de los Andes, que se trifurca en Pasto y la Ceja, presenta en la composición geológica de sus tres ramales diferencias muy notables... Mientras no tengamos inmigración y capitales extranjeros que, respetados en nuestras caribes revoluciones, puedan construir, ferrocarriles, desarrollar la agricultura, explotar nuestras ricas minas de oro y fomentar la industria, nuestra querida Patria no podrá regenerarse fundamentalmente, ni salir del atraso, miseria y postración en que se encuentra… El 12 de enero de 1886 salí de Bogotá con dirección á la ferrería de La Pradera, acompañado de seis amables caballeros, con el fin de estudiar aquella fuente de nuestros ferrocarriles futuros, aquella cuna del trabajo, de la paz y del progreso venideros de Colombia
