Description
Summary:The relationship between Puelche wind and forest fires in the Bío Bío region is studied. Different statistical tests were applied to analyze the relationship between the occurrence of Puelche wind and the frequency of forest fires in the region. The results between the total number of fires per season and the days with Puelche wind are statistically non-significant among these variables. When the averages of fires per day, produced with and without Puelche wind were analyzed, for each season, the highest values of occurrence of fires per day were presented when there is Puelche wind, indicating a strong effect of this event on the occurrence daily of fires, since these increase in 90% in relation to the number of days in which there is no Puelche. The results of the difference between the number of fires with and without Puelche wind with respect to the average number of total fires, show that the days with Puelche wind exceed both the total value and the average value without Puelche events, results that confirm the strong effect who has a day with Puelche about forest fires. In the province of Concepción, the greatest number of fires with Puelche wind is produced, being the most affected despite being the one with the smallest area in the region, but it is the most populated and with the largest area of forests and plantations in relation to its size. Therefore, with Puelche wind increases the occurrence of forest fires and their propagation is favored.
