Description
Summary:Bahasa Melayu or Malay language is one of the main languages of the Austronesian family, with almost 300 million speakers, a native language for Malaysians. Bahasa Melayu is spoken in Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore. Speakers in these countries can generally understand each other, although there are differences, mainly in vocabulary. The Bahasa Melayu standard language of these countries is closely related to the Malay language spoken during the time of the Majapahit Empire in Southeast Asia. It has roots in the Sanskrit, Arabic and Javanese languages, but it was acquiring variations according to the colonial influences in each country; for Indonesia, influence of the Dutch, and for Malaysia, influence of English, Tamils and Chinese.
