En su mayoría, los centros geriátricos en Medellín no cumplen con los estándares requeridos, lo que genera inquietudes acerca de la calidad de la atención brindada a los adultos mayores. Para abordar el trabajo, se siguió una metodología estructurada que implicaba la obtención de datos a través de encuestas y contacto directo con los centros geriátricos, seguida de la evaluación del estado actual y la propuesta de soluciones específicas. El enfoque buscaba contribuir a la mejora de la atención a los adultos mayores en Medellín a través de una gestión más eficiente en estos centros. Este trabajo se enfocó en evaluar cómo los conceptos de ingeniería industrial pueden mejorar la gestión técnica de los centros geriátricos en Medellín. Se realizó una revisión detallada de los procesos y operaciones relacionados con el cuidado y la administración de adultos mayores, identificando herramientas de ingeniería industrial aplicables. Se encontró que los centros geriátricos son complejos y requieren una comunicación constante entre aspectos de gestión y operativos para mejorar la calidad de atención. A pesar de esfuerzos, se identificaron oportunidades de mejora en varios procesos, con 8 de 22 procesos evaluados con calificaciones inferiores al 80%. La aplicación de conceptos de ingeniería industrial en los centros geriátricos se encontró deficiente, lo que sugiere la necesidad de mejorar su implementación para lograr la excelencia. Por último, se propusieron herramientas específicas para elevar procesos con rendimiento limitado y se exploró la adaptación de herramientas con calificaciones reducidas al contexto geriátrico. Se destaca la importancia de incluir tecnologías para mejorar el rendimiento de los centros geriátricos sin generar costos excesivos.ABSTRACT: currently, there is a growing challenge due to the increasing elderly population in Colombia, resulting in a higher demand for services in geriatric centers. Most geriatric centers in Medellin do not meet the required standards, raising concerns about the quality of care provided to the elderly. To address this issue, a structured methodology was followed, involving data acquisition through surveys and direct contact with geriatric centers, followed by an assessment of the current state and the proposal of specific solutions. The focus was on contributing to the improvement of elderly care in Medellin through more efficient management in these centers. This work focused on evaluating how industrial engineering concepts can enhance the technical management of geriatric centers in Medellin. A detailed review of the processes and operations related to the care and administration of the elderly was conducted, identifying applicable industrial engineering tools. It was found that geriatric centers are complex and require constant communication between management and operational aspects to enhance the quality of care. Despite efforts, opportunities for improvement were identified in several processes, with eight out of twenty-two processes evaluated scoring below 80%. The application of industrial engineering concepts in geriatric centers was found to be deficient, suggesting the need to improve their implementation to achieve excellence. Finally, specific tools were proposed to enhance low-performing processes, and the adaptation of tools with low scores to the geriatric context was explored.
