Se destacan los beneficios culturales, ambientales, políticos, comerciales y la disminución de violencia que los espacios públicos ofrecen a los ciudadanos. Adicionalmente se plantea que el elemento que determina el éxito de un espacio público y que permite maximizar los beneficios sociales y económicos, está dado por la apropiación que los ciudadanos hacen de los espacios. Cuando un espacio logra que las personas lo utilicen, se considera que el espacio público ha sido exitoso, porque más allá que brindar belleza, el espacio público debe convocar a las personas para que interactúen entre ellas y con el entorno que éste les ofrece. Para comprobar la presencia de beneficios económicos y sociales cuando se construye un espacio público, se realiza un análisis de lo que ha sucedido con dos espacios públicos de la ciudad de Medellín. Se elige el paseo peatonal de Andalucía, ubicado en el barrio Andalucía (zona nororiental de Medellín), porque permite observar que al construir obras de infraestructura de calidad en los lugares más humildes de la ciudad, se producen beneficios sociales y económicos. También se eligió analizar el caso del paseo peatonal de Carabobo porque es uno de los referentes más importantes que se tiene en Medellín sobre espacio público de calidad, además que la vía sobre la cual se construyo tiene una trascendencia histórica para Medellín porque allí se han ubicado y se ubican varios de sus edificios más importantes. Se hacen también recomendaciones sobre el tipo de espacio público que se debe construir en un futuro en la ciudad de Medellín, de acuerdo con un análisis de los proyectos propuestos por la administración municipal para construir en el periodo 2008-2015.ABSTRACT: This research focuses in identifying the relation that exists between the construction of public space and the gain of social and economic benefits for the cities. There is an analysis of the cultural, environmental, political, commercial and urban violence benefits that the public spaces offers to the citizens. The approach that is used to make the analysis of the success of the public spaces and that allowed to maximize the social and economical benefits is the appropriation that citizens make of the public spaces. When a space is used by people, it is consider that the public space have been successful, because public spaces must go further than being beautiful spaces, public spaces should meet people to interact between them and to interact with the spaces that are being offered. To check if there is presence of social and economical benefits when a public space is build, there is an analysis of 2 public spaces of Medellin. The first one is the “Andalucia boulevard”, it is located in the Andalucia neighborhood (north east of Medellin), and it is analyzed because it allow to conclude that when quality public spaces are build in the poorest (economical) places of the city, there is a big gain due to the social and economical benefits that this investment produce. The second public space that is analyzed is the “Carabobo Boulevard”, it is analyzed because is a reference of quality public space, there is also a historical importance in this space because it was built in a street that have some of the most important buildings of the city.
