Desde entonces el progreso de esta rama se vio potenciada por el continuo desarrollo de la tecnología biomédica y la necesidad de gestionar su impacto en el ambiente hospitalario, con el único fin de prestar el mejor servicio a una relación costo – beneficio óptimo. Actualmente el reflejo de este progreso se observa en la presencia de programas educativos, grupos de estudio y asociaciones, que tratan de generar profesionales que se encarguen de soportar y mejorar el cuidado del paciente aplicando habilidades ingenieriles y administrativas a la tecnología médica. En el presente trabajo se hace un estudio descriptivo de la Ingeniería Clínica con el objetivo primordial de ofrecer una estructura curricular minina que servirá de base para el desarrollo de programas de especialización en esta rama de la Ingeniería. Este estudio describe principalmente los conceptos teóricos en los que se basa la Ingeniería Clínica, la percepción y desarrollo de esta en el área metropolitana de Medellín especialmente, y las esferas de actuación más importantes, entre las que se destacan la administración, adquisición, seguridad y capacitación en tecnología biomédica e igualmente, la planeación para el desarrollo de las instalaciones hospitalarias. Además con este trabajo se quiere impulsar el desarrollo de esta rama de la Ingeniería dentro del sistema hospitalario colombiano y ser la base para detectar la percepción a futuro de esta, dentro de los responsables de la gestión tecnológica en las IPS de nuestro país.ABSTRACT: As of the fifties in the United Sates, the growing relationship between the engineering and medical sciences, favored the development and application of a knowledge focused in offer solutions into the area of the medicine and biology. Proof of this is the origin of biomedical engineering, and later, from the seventies, the study and development of Clinical Engineering, that happened to be essential part in the support of the welfare medical activities in the most important healthcare institutions of the mentioned country. Since then the progress of this branch was harnessed by the continuous development of the biomedical technology and the necessity to manage its impact in the hospitable atmosphere, with the only aim to serve the best, with the highest relation cost - benefit. At the moment, the reflection of this progress is observed in the presence of educative programs, training groups and associations that try to generate professionals who are in charge to support and to improve the care of the patient applying engineering and managerial skills to healthcare technology. In the present work it is presented a descriptive study of Clinical Engineering with the objective to offer a curricular structure that will serve as base for the development of programs of specialization in this branch of Engineering. This study mainly describes the theoretical concepts on which Clinical Engineering is based, the perception and development of this in the metropolitan area of Medellín, and the more important spheres of performance, between which they stand out the acquisition, management, security and training of technology, besides the planning for the development of healthcare facilities.
