Summary: | Education reforms in Latin America have significantly changed the panorama in terms of stability and incen-tives for teachers in the region in recent decades. The different governments try to establish mechanisms that allow them to have a better control of the budget, but in their eagerness to achieve objectives suggested by international organizations, such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), they establish policies that are not agreed upon with the unions in their elaboration. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to analyze the behavior of such education reforms in the Latin American context, with emphasis on the changes of recent decades. Documentary review and content analysis serve as a methodological basis for deriving a system of theoretical categories in atten-tion to the research topic. Among the results, categories such as the impact of well-paid teachers on the quality of education, as well as the role played by unions in the processes of consultation and dialogue with governments, stand out. It is concluded that there is a need to generate solid criteria that allow us to evaluate the current state of the education sector from an objective perspective, paying special attention to the system of income, permanence, promotions, and incentives for teachers in Latin America. |
