Description
Summary:The current Cienaga de Mallorquín is a low depth body of water, of irregular form, with an approximate area of 900 Has. The original one was an estuarine lagoon that changed its form while it was part of the natural delta of the Magdalena River . The double feeding of fresh water (from the Magdalena River and Arroyo Grande ) and of salt water (coming from the Caribbean Sea) and with the appropriate proportions, gave to it, the estuarine quality and made it highly productive in their biota. This condition was drastically diminished soon after the construction of the Tajamares of Bocas de Ceniza in the Magdalena River (1924 - 1936) and of the intervention in the Tributary Basin of the Arroyo Grande (more strongly from 1950). Simultaneously, by the erosion caused by the presence of strong waves in the area, the Cienaga began to come closer to the coast and it disappeared as such, but the name was kept to give it to another one that was more toward mainland. Toward 1992 the fishermen of La Playa, a village located on the Cienaga riverside, having government and private support, installed pipes that crossed the Occidental Tajamar of Bocas de Ceniza and communicated again the Cienaga with the Magdalena River turning it again into an estuarine lagoon, although, in addition to this artificial communication of fresh water, it communicates with the sea periodically (naturally or with the help of the people of the area), when one or several mouths are opened on the bar that separates it from the sea. The Cienaga de Mallorquin, besides the evolution that has suffered in relation with its feeding of fresh and marine waters, it has been intervened by artificial fillers, natural sedimentations, receiving of served waters, contact with the old garbage dumps of Barranquilla and with recent garbage’s, receipt particles and atmospheric gases, human establishments in invasions, partially predator fishing far beyond its recovery capacity and it is the place selected to build two of the port projects that are proposed in the city of Barranquilla Many of these actions have depressed the environmental condition of the Cienaga de Mallorquin, and it is required an urgent intervention of its recovery. Although it is a continued promise the solution for the sewage system since year 2000, and lately it seems that it is coming closer, for the time being, we continue seeing it as promise. Therefore, this study had as the main objective, in fact, to create conscience of the recovery of the Cienaga de Mallorquin, from the point of view of an urban development, undressing the negative consequences when it is projected without having an environmental sense and without a sustainable development in the time
