Summary: | The monetary economy had generated a great deal of financial products and services which knowledge is necessary. This article aims to analyze the economic literacy situation and its characterization in terms of consumption and debt in vulnerable families in Barranquilla, Colombia. From a survey in 18 poor families selected by non-probabilistic sample, the results shown that adolescents and adults have difficulties to understand basic economic concepts, however they have skills, abilities, and attitudes to manage financial resources. In addition, the sample families suffer tensions between low income with liquidity preference, imitation, and conspicuous effects. We conclude that economic literacy assumed and managing by sampling families corresponding mainly to surviving strategies in the context of income effect. © 2021, Universidad del Zulia.
