Summary:The objective of this study is to describe the characteristic elements of product innovation in the SMEs of the food subsector of the city of Barranquilla. It was formulated as a research question. How is the product innovation in the SMEs of the food subsector of the city of Barranquilla? Descriptive study, with descriptive and correlational statistical analysis, result of the application of a questionnaire to 15 SMEs registered in the city of Barranquilla belonging to this subsector. The study concludes that the product innovation in SMEs of the food subsector in the city of Barranquilla, is characterized by the development of innovation activities, the introduction of new products to the market and significantly improved products released to the market
