Summary:The present work aims to assess the energy generation potential by piezoelectric effect, associated with the pedestrian flows at the 85th street of the city of barranquilla, looking forward to decreasing the externalities related to the road constructions projects by analyzing the costs linked to the implementation of these technologies, its energetic production capacity, the perceived monetary savings in energy fares, as well as the impact on the co2 emissions reduction. Mathematical models are introduced to estimate the number of footsteps along the study section and the amount of produced energy as a result of the installation of a piezoelectric tiles network over the surface of the walking paths. Additionally, the relation between this potential and the level of service of the paths was used to establish equations that allows to predict the energetic behavior of any other pedestrian path. The research found a high energetic potential along with a considerable reduction in emissions, however, the economic feasibility analysis did not show the expected results due to the elevated cost related to the implementation of the tiles network. Nevertheless, expecting the reduction in prices of this kind of technologies in the future, and with the help of the established equations as a tool to estimate the energetic potential, it is intended to locate points where the implementation of the tiles is feasible.
