Summary:The current educational policies instituted by the Colombian government have proposed strategies in relation to training by competencies, and the results in external evaluations as indicators that allow assessing the academic performance of students. Nevertheless, there are internal and external factors that affect the learning, didactic, academic performance and educational purposes in general. Interesting facts, which motivated this study, whose objective was to configure a pedagogical proposal from the teacher's perception that contributes to the strengthening of mathematical didactics based on the improvement of academic performance in external tests. For this, the study was based on the rationalist-deductive approach, through a multi-method or mixed methodological conception that guides a documentary and field design, where descriptive, explanatory and propositional levels are passed. The units of analysis selected for the field design were nine (9) elementary school teachers, and for the documentary analysis, the results of the knowledge tests of the fifth grade mathematics area of the years 2015-20162017 of the IED Salvador Suárez Suárez, of the district of Barranquilla, Department of Atlántico Colombia. According on the findings, common difficulties that students present in mathematical thoughts and skills are revealed, likewise, the meaning of evaluation is analyzed, which must transcend the exam and standardized paper and pencil tests, to a learning process and assessment of competences from the strengthening of the didactic mediation of mathematics as a prior process that contributes to academic performance in external tests and in general in various socio-educational contexts.
