Summary: | In Colombia, the main causes of lagoon contamination are caused by companies such as the industrial, mining, agriculture sector, and lack of basic sanitation. Aquatic environments are the most affected, resulting in biodiversity loss. One of the most vulnerable ecosystems in the Caribbean region is the Mallorquín lagoon located in the Atlantic department, due to heavy metal contamination. In this research. the levels of four heavy metals (Hg; Cr; Cd; Ni) present in 17 sediment samples of the Mallorquín lagoon –Barranquilla (N Colombia) were investigated. The samples (Cr; Ni; Cd) were analyzed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). For Hg, a LUMEX® mercury analyzer was used. Concentrations that exceed the internationally admissible limits, especially for Cr, Ni and Hg, were found in the sample M4 (96,704; 45,474; 0.199 μg.g-1), M5 (100,378; 44,453; 0.153 μg.g-1), M6 (97,737; 47,605; 0.14 μg.g-1) and M9 (104,918; 47.32; 0.143 μg.g-1). Finally, it was evidenced that organic matter and grain size is a factor of distribution of heavy metals in the sediments of the Mallorquín lagoon. |
