Description
Summary:The purpose of this work was to describe the changes that occur in the communicational processes in the family environment of people suffering from Alzheimer's disease in the city of Barranquilla, initially exploring how people suffering from the disease communicate with their relatives verbally and nonverbally, and identifying the feedback strategies used by caregivers, members of the family environment, to communicate with the affected relative. Theoretically, this research was based on the contributions of Herbert Blumer (1969) regarding the theory of symbolic interactionism and Paul Watzlawick (1952) with his theory of human communication. Observation units 1 and 2 were 2 persons with Alzheimer's disease living in the city of Barranquilla and 2 family caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease living in the city of Barranquilla, respectively, according to certain characteristics, a descriptive and qualitative research was proposed, focusing on discovering the meaning of communicational changes, through observation of those affected by the disease and in-depth interviews with family members. The results obtained were the detection and description of the changes that occur in the communication process of the family environment that has a relative with this condition, observing that non-verbal communication is the model most used unconsciously by people with the disease, and that their relatives consciously do not use any type of feedback strategy to communicate with them.
