Summary:Due to its geographical position and socio-natural resources, the Colombian department of La Guajira has strong potential to develop ecological and cultural tourism. The aim of this research was to analyze the tourist activity in La Guajira and to design an innovation model (MITEC) for sustainable development and management of ecological and cultural tourism. The research is projective, based on the holopractic method. Descriptive techniques were used to make a diagnosis of tourism in La Guajira. Likert surveys were designed to collect primary data during August-November 2021 period. Secondary data was obtained through a documentary review of research articles and institutional documents. In this research 74 tourism service providers, 22 residents of the area of influence of the ecological and cultural attractions, 24 tourists, eight decision-makers, and twelve experts in tourism innovation were surveyeds. Results were processed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. Elements of innovation and sustainable development of ecological-cultural tourism were measured. Finally, a synergistic innovation model was proposed. MITEC is made up of six categories and twenty-three variables validated using a Delphi panel. MITEC was developed in four phases, 16 stages. The model contains strategic guidelines to promote public participation of tourism and stakeholders in the management of destination innovation. MITEC let to promote cultural elements and ecological values of the region. This model also contributes to the achievement of the sustainable development goals for the 2030 Agenda for the department of La Guajira.
