The most relevant conclusions reached include the following: (a) the visual appearance (colouring) of the rust, rust texture, nature of the corrosion products and compactness of the rust layers formed are similar in both types of weathering steel. (b) No great differences are observed in the corrosion resistance. Slight differences occur in the industrial atmosphere, where ASTM A-242 presents 10–13% less corrosion than ASTM A-588. (c) In the C2-C3 ISO corrosivity atmosphere both types of weathering steels are adequate for unpainted use. However are not suitable in higher ISO corrosivity atmosphere.

Los aceros fueron expuestos durante hasta 5 años en diferentes tipos de atmósfera: rural, urbana, industrial y marina. La resistencia a la corrosión atmosférica de los aceros se evaluó y las capas de óxido que se formaron sobre ellos se caracterizaron por difracción de rayos X, microscopía óptica y microscopía electrónica de barrido. Las conclusiones más relevantes alcanzadas incluyen lo siguiente: (a) el aspecto visual (colorante) del óxido, la textura del óxido, la naturaleza de los productos de corrosión y la compacidad de las capas de óxido formadas son similares en ambos tipos de acero para intemperie. (b) No se observan grandes diferencias en la resistencia a la corrosión. Se producen pequeñas diferencias en la atmósfera industrial, donde la ASTM A-242 presenta entre 10 y 13% menos corrosión que la ASTM A-588. (c) En la atmósfera de corrosividad ISO C2-C3, ambos tipos de aceros resistentes a la intemperie son adecuados para uso sin pintar.
