Description
Summary:The economic and technological development is growing everyday plus the implementation in the new technologies for the health sector have become a source to generate Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) because it must be continually updated either because of the new technologies or for the improvement in medical treatments and therefore this kind of waste has been increased. It is important to know that the management of this waste must be done in the proper way because of the risk that it could take for the human health and for the environment. Thanks to this research that was made in an exploratory type was possible to determine the current status of the generation of WEEE in 60 institutions that provide health care, better known as IPS for the Spanish initials, that includes clinics, hospitals, dental and ophthalmologic centers in Barranquilla. Depart from the results of this research it was possible determinate that even if the 53% of those Health Institutions do not have records of the amount generated in WEEE, a big part of them report a WEEE amount above to 150 kg/year. From a different side, the 40% of this Health Institutions do not have a collection center for this waste and on this way, there was generated a different issue related to the recollection of this waste by the external authorized entity. In this way, most of the IPS reported making the final disposal of the waste through the return of the equipment to the suppliers, through processes of use of parts, donation and Post-consumption plans. In general, it is possible to realize that there is not knowledge about the risk for the environment made by the incorrect treatment of the WEEE, plus the lack of knowledge in front of the proper management standards established by the competent regulations.
