Effects of rising seawater temperatures in the Tripocal Eastern Pacific : invasive species and disease prevalence in Pacific seafans pacifigorgia gorgoniidae.

We will also monitor environmental variables in order to test a correlation between disease prevalence and seawater temperature anomalies. The study of seafan populations will be carried out at Cabo Corrientes, the western most point in the Colombian Pacific, together with Gorgona island and Malpelo island, sites where affected colonies were recently observed and tagged. This project will not only provide timely information on a new area affected by coral diseases but will comprise a unique opportunity to test the direct links between disease outbreaks, invasive species and rising seawater temperatures. Particular goals of the project are.Specific Objectives : 1. To isolate the fungal disease pathogens determining the host-range, epizootiology and prevalence of particular fungal assemblages through time in both diseased and healthy colonies in the Colombian TEP.Specific Objectives : 2. To monitor disease prevalence at several TEP locations and compared them against environmental variables such as water temperature and sea level. - Currently, we have two possible hypotheses on the present situation. (i) The disease just appeared in the area and susceptible species will be reduced to extinction in a few years; (ii) the disease was due to opportunistic fungal species already in the area, which infects colonies after disturbance, such as rising temperatures or extreme high tides, and recovery is possible if conditions return to normality.Specific Objectives : 3. To monitor the invasion of Carijoa riisei and its relationship to octocoral mortality and disease. Disturbances such as elevated seawater temperatures and extreme high tides, with a following high nutrient input, are two likely environmental factors that could lead not only to octocoral disease but also to invasive species superiority. A synergy hypothesis will be tested in this project.PublicationORIGINAL120452129002 20152430131722.pdf120452129002 20152430131722.pdfInforme Técnicoapplication/pdf7254395https://repositorio.minciencias.gov.co/bitstreams/e52e527b-207f-4798-9dcd-0a80a709b126/download2e64121c2320badbf665810dc752d2a7MD51LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain; charset=utf-814798https://repositorio.minciencias.gov.co/bitstreams/6edfc478-9b4e-41dc-afc2-4632f7a12bc7/download88794144ff048353b359a3174871b0d5MD52license.txtlicense.txttext/plain; charset=utf-80https://repositorio.minciencias.gov.co/bitstreams/229d2acb-651c-4330-82ac-cbb9a654e326/downloadd41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eMD55TEXT120452129002 20152430131722.pdf.txt120452129002 20152430131722.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain21https://repositorio.minciencias.gov.co/bitstreams/213fe665-8822-489e-8ec7-2a99776a661f/download46dab46279ab4ecb929adb971a632731MD53THUMBNAIL120452129002 20152430131722.pdf.jpg120452129002 20152430131722.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg8264https://repositorio.minciencias.gov.co/bitstreams/1539241e-f690-4194-8e8b-3d057a836cd0/downloadd00390f5000f4365b167566e1b5c3f65MD5420.500.14143/39506oai:repositorio.minciencias.gov.co:20.500.14143/395062023-11-29 17:35:51.264restrictedhttps://repositorio.minciencias.gov.coRepositorio Institucional de Mincienciascendoc@minciencias.gov.co
