Sin embargo estas fuentes de alimento están constantemente amenazadas por la Sigatoka negra, enfermedad que ataca el área foliar de las plantas de banano y plátano. El control de la Sigatoka negra se hace principalmente mediante la aplicación extensiva de químicos sobre los cultivos. El uso de fungicidas es la forma más común de controlar la enfermedad, constituyendo entre un 30 a 40% de costos de producción, además de trastornos en los ecosistemas y en la salud humana.
