Análisis de la secuencia de estos genes mostraron un alto grado de conservación en el genero Leishmania tanto a nivel de nucleótidos como a nivel de proteínas. Mientras que el gen Meta está presente como gen de copia única, el gen Mat-l está presente en dos copias. Evaluación del nivel de expresión de la proteína Meta-l en diferentes especies, muestran que en algunas cepas el patrón parece ser constitutivo, mientras que en otras parece ser un gen regulado positivamente en el promastigote metacíclico. En contraste, el gen Mat-l parece estar ausente en cepas de Leishmania Viannia, puesto que el empleo de dos pares de cebadores para tratar de amplificar este gen en estas especies fueron infructuosos. Igualmente, análisis de northern blot o southern blot empleando una sonda heteróloga obtenida de L. infantum no detectaron presencia de este gen o genes relacionado en cepas de Leishmania Viannia.
