Cien años después Leonard Rogers observó cómo amastigotes obtenidos del hígado de un paciente con kala-azar, se convertían en formas flageladas semejantes a los tripanosomátidos presentes en algunos insectos, lo que hizo que estos últimos quedaran inmediatamente bajo sospecha de actuar como vectores. Desde ese momento el estudio de los flebotomíneos se ha convertido en una tarea apasionante que ha envuelto a sistemáticos de todas las latitudes.
