University licensing, a technology transfer mechanism that has received less attention in the literature despite its relevance, was examined. We assumed that universities follow different patterns according to their internal strategy and resources. In order to deeper explore our results, we also investigated which combinations of the above factors led to the absence of licensing. To do so we used qualitative comparative analysis (QCA). Sample included 39 Spanish public universities with on-campus education. Our results suggest that universities should strive to achieve a good mix of quality and quantity in terms of human capital and research experience in order to be active in licensing. Surprisingly, knowledge stock is rather irrelevant. We observe that subject-mix plays a role, as technical universities are more prone to generate licences. |

En concreto, exploramos el efecto combinado del capital humano, la experiencia en investigación y el stock de conocimientos sobre la concesión de licencias. Suponemos que las universidades siguen patrones diferentes según su estrategia y recursos internos. Para profundizar en nuestros resultados, también investigamos qué combinaciones de los factores mencionados conducían a la ausencia de concesión de licencias. Para ello, utilizamos el análisis comparativo cualitativo (ACQ). La muestra incluyó 39 universidades públicas españolas con enseñanza en el campus. Nuestros resultados sugieren que las universidades deberían esforzarse por conseguir una buena combinación de calidad y cantidad en términos de capital humano y experiencia investigadora para ser activas en la concesión de licencias. Sorprendentemente, el stock de conocimientos es bastante irrelevante.
