Summary:This study aimed to assess the performance of concrete to variations in the percentages of coarse aggregate and ceramic material for internal curing by assessing the mechanical properties and durability of the mixtures made with this material. The ceramic material used in the different mixture trials was produced from crushing structural bricks, commonly used in residential construction in the city of Bogota Colombia. Concrete mixtures were evaluated with three different percentages of ceramic material (0%, 20%, and 40%) used in substitution of coarse aggregate and two values of water / cement ratio (0.30 and 0.50). The resistance to compression, elasticity modulus, absorption, permeability, shrinkage, chloride ion permeability and sorptivity were evaluated. Test results showed that as the replacement percentage of ceramic material, for samples with water / cement ratio of 0.30, increases the results of the resistance to compression are higher than the results for the control sample; while for the water / cement ratio of 0.50 resistances lower than those of a concrete with 100% natural aggregate compression were obtained. The modulus of elasticity for all concrete with ceramic replacement were always lower than those obtained for the concrete made with 100% coarse aggregate. Similarly, the properties of durability, measured by permeability tests, absorption, sorptivity and chloride ion permeability, are affected by the increased percentage of ceramic replacement and water / cement ratio. Internal curing is beneficial only to increase the resistance to compression in concrete of low water / cement to reduce drying shrinkage.
