Summary: | The challenge for floor engineers is to achieve satisfactory foundation systems for each of the buildings or structures that are projected; understanding as a satisfactory foundation that which provides an adequate safety factor against a failure due to the exhaustion of the resistance to soil cutting, total settlements and admissible differentials defined by the project, and achieving the best benefit - cost ratio for the investor. For the case of the city of Bogotá (Colombia), where the subsoil of the city is made up of a large lacustrine deposit, of great thickness (up to 300m in some parts), constituted by very low capacity and very compressible clays, generates foundation conditions of great challenge for floor engineers. In a very general way, and without this being a rule, buildings of up to two levels are cemented in footings; buildings between two and four levels are based on combined footings or plates; Foundations between five to ten levels are built on continuous plates, and buildings greater than 10 levels may already require deep foundations of piles. |
