Summary: | The performance of students is a variable of high interest for researchers and academic administrators of universities. The present study makes an exploratory statistical analysis of the impact that the time in which the mathematics classes of a university in Latin America can be programmed, and the approval rate of said subjects. After inquiring about the state of the art, a contextualization of the problem is made in terms of geographical location, educational level and class of subjects studied. The historical data of eleven semesters of grades of the subjects of mathematics are counted, whose registries contain the hour of the class, student, subject, professor, state of approval, state of the student, among others. The study is carried out using Pareto analysis, which is responsible for organizing, from higher to lower, the approval frequencies of the subjects according to their class time and graph them in descending bar charts. This type of analysis allows you to quickly identify the hours in which the percentage of approval is higher and lower. Pareto diagrams are complemented with simple bar graphs in several stages: globally, subject by subject with all teachers, and, subject by subject, suppressing teachers of higher and lower percentages of approval. All the analyzes are duly supported statistically since the data present a normal distribution. Finally, the conclusions of the study are obtained, where it is found that in most subjects the delta between the highest and lowest percentage of approval does not reach 10% despite the class time. However, for the mathematics subjects that the first-year students study, different results are observed that it is suggested to study carefully. Additionally, it is proposed for future work, the multivariate analysis of the problem addressed, as well as the design of a business intelligence tool that allows to visualize in a timely manner the incidences of one or another variable in student performance. |
