Description
Summary:The biofuels industry is one of the newest and most interesting agricultural sectors, which produces fuels from crops and residues of animal and vegetable origin, thus decreasing carbon dioxide emissions, however, this economic activity has some impacts or negative consequences on the welfare of societies, taking into account that this type of fuel requires agricultural crops for their production, which affect the availability or food supply, thus generating inflationary pressures on some food products. The empirical evidence suggests that the growth of this agroindustry is partially responsible for the food crisis 2007-2008, however, this issue has to be addressed as rigorously as possible, given the complexity and variety of actors involved in this type of phenomena. . In this paper a statistical and theoretical analysis is made in order to examine the Colombian case. In other words, this document aims to determine if the emergence of the biofuels industry in Colombia has generated or not inflationary pressures on food and agricultural products between 2006 and 2012.
