Description
Summary:Nowadays, stress has become a habitual fact of human life, since it is common in all work environments to a greater or lesser extent, and certainly, it has been established that working conditions have a significant impact on employees health. The effects of state-anxiety are of particular importance when the affected population involves healthcare personnel. The studies that relate stress in health professionals to their level of performance, revealed that the consequences of the prevalence of high levels of stress are reverted to inappropriate professional performance towards their patients. Similarly, exhaustion and poor well-being have been recognized as common occupational hazards among health professionals. Therefore, providing technological tools that facilitate the identification and proper management of state-anxiety constitutes a promotion and prevention strategy in the face of this growing problem. Thus, the objective of this study is to implement and assess the performance of a voice-based biofeedback system for managing state-anxiety in a student population in the healthcare area. By integrating software design and digital signal processing strategies in both time and frequency domains for the extraction of non-linguistic features from subject’s voice, it was possible to generate a biofeedback system to manage and reduce state-anxiety. This development was validated by a comparing the obtained results with those of two types of widely used self-evaluation based psychometric tests (SAM and STAI), both before and after the biofeedback intervention. Statistically significant differences were obtained between the level of state-anxiety before and after biofeedback intervention. Thus, the present study demonstrates that biofeedback systems based on the measurement of non-linguistic features of the voice signal constitutes a viable strategy for managing this condition in a less intrusive way
