Uncontrolled trial conducted in 243 female scholars (mean age 14 years ± 1.5 SD). Two 90 min educational sessions were carried out in March 2015 according to the Colombian guidelines for educational communication in the framework of cancer control. Posters and other educational materials were created by scholars after the intervention. All participants completed a self-reported questionnaire—The Cancer Awareness Measure—at pre and post-intervention, as well as 1, 3, and 6 months after the intervention. Smoking prevalence (8.2% at baseline) was reduced by 3.7% at 6 months follow-up (p less than 0.005). The scholars exhibited low to moderate awareness of both warning signs and risk factors for lung cancer at baseline. These variables showed statistically significant improvements at 6 months follow-up (p less than 0.005). Similar improvements were also found for physical activity, high-fat diet, and fruits and vegetable intake. This evaluation of the Colombian guidelines for educational communication in the framework of cancer control raised awareness towards lung cancer prevention, reduced smoking, and improved other healthy-lifestyle-related factors in a group of female scholars from a low-income area in Bogota, Colombia. Further randomized controlled studies are needed. © 2017, The Author(s).application/pdfhttps://doi.org/10.1007/s13187-017-1246-z1543015408858195https://repository.urosario.edu.co/handle/10336/22272engSpringer New York LLC1300No. 61294Journal of Cancer EducationVol. 33Journal of Cancer Education, ISSN:15430154, 08858195, Vol.33, No.6 (2018); pp. 1294-1300https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-85022022802&doi=10.1007%2fs13187-017-1246-z&partnerID=40&md5=f7606c3fbab7d81f07e90c88d6a57beaAbierto (Texto Completo)http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2instname:Universidad del Rosarioreponame:Repositorio Institucional EdocURAdolescentAttitude to healthChildColombiaEarly cancer diagnosisFemaleHealth educationHealthy lifestyleHumanLung tumorProceduresPsychologyAdolescentChildColombiaEarly detection of cancerFemaleHealth educationHealthy lifestyleHumansLung neoplasmsPreventionRisk factorSkin cancerSun protectionattitudespracticeHealth knowledgeRaising Awareness for Lung Cancer Prevention and Healthy Lifestyles in Female Scholars from a Low-Income Area in Bogota, Colombia: Evaluation of a National FrameworkarticleArtículohttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501Meneses-Echávez, JFAlba-Ramírez, PACorrea-Bautista, JEORIGINALMeneses-Echavez2018_Article_RaisingAwarenessForLungCancerP.pdfapplication/pdf389443https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/50e5553d-06af-4371-b511-29a50bafc219/downloadfe1f81974f166d89a6099642512a01e8MD51TEXTMeneses-Echavez2018_Article_RaisingAwarenessForLungCancerP.pdf.txtMeneses-Echavez2018_Article_RaisingAwarenessForLungCancerP.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain30380https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/6a71bc5d-8b13-4243-a2ee-321753cab34a/download13ad7d5a57d29824c9d170bdacfe99ceMD52THUMBNAILMeneses-Echavez2018_Article_RaisingAwarenessForLungCancerP.pdf.jpgMeneses-Echavez2018_Article_RaisingAwarenessForLungCancerP.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg4541https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/fe105508-7e00-4aa7-8c9b-03a55d9ff318/download5fe23b0dc3c97088cc26552151609d85MD5310336/22272oai:repository.urosario.edu.co:10336/222722022-05-02 07:37:20.324588https://repository.urosario.edu.coRepositorio institucional EdocURedocur@urosario.edu.co |
