Aprovechando la información sobre medidas cognitivas y rasgos de personalidad recogidas por la encuesta Young Lives en Vietnam y las variación entre comunas y el periodo de gestación de los niños de la encuesta, se estima el efecto tanto de los choques por exceso de precipitación como por reducción de precipitación sobre el desarrollo de habilidades cognitivas y no cognitiva a largo plazo. Se encuentra, que la exposición en el útero a choques por exceso de precipitación aumentan los puntajes de matemáticas en 59.2 y 42.1 puntos porcentuales sobre la desviación estándar a la edad de 8 y 15 años. Los resultados positivos de los choques por exceso de precipitación se encuentran principalmente en regiones donde prevalece el cultivo de arroz, que usa agua intensivamente. No obstante cuando el choque por exceso de precipitación medido por el SPI es mayor a 2, el efecto sobre las habilidades cognitivas resulta ser negativo. Por otro lado, los niños expuestos en el útero a choques por disminución de precipitación presentan menores puntajes en la prueba de matemáticas en 27.1 puntos porcentuales sobre la desviación estándar a la edad de 15 años. Los resultados son robustos al validarlos con el test de Romano-Wolf. Debido a la importancia del desarrollo de estas habilidades para el desempeño académico, laboral y social, los efectos persistentes y negativos encontrados sugieren que el no mitigar los impactos de este tipo de choques puede conducir a profundizar las desigualdades y crea desventajas que dificulta que las personas alcancen su potencial, principalmente en entornos más desfavorables.

Drawing on information on cognitive measures and personality traits collected by the Young Lives survey in Vietnam and variation across communes and the gestational period of children in the survey, we estimate the effect of both excess and reduced rainfall shocks on long-term cognitive and non-cognitive skill development. We find that in utero exposure to excess precipitation shocks increases math scores by 59.2 and 42.1 percentage points over the standard deviation at ages 8 and 15. The positive results of excess rainfall shocks are found mainly in regions where water-intensive rice cultivation is prevalent. However, when the excess rainfall shock measured by SPI is greater than 2, the effect on cognitive skills is negative. On the other hand, children exposed in utero to decreased precipitation shocks have lower math test scores by 27.1 percentage points above the standard deviation at age 15 years. The results are robust when validated with the Romano-Wolf test.
