Introduction Patient safety is of high importance for the health sector. Conducting studies on the causes of adverse events are the way to alert the health area. In the literature, checklists have been implemented in different areas of hospitals to improve patient outcomes. Objective To identify the nature, extent and type of evidence surrounding safety and quality outcomes with the implementation of checklists in intensive care settings. Methodology A literature search was conducted in the main database sources, covering literature published in Latin America and gray literature. Results were synthesized by type of design, type of checklist, context and population. Results Fifty-eight articles were included. Of the selected articles, 46.5% were pseudo-experimental studies, of which 42.3% had a before-and-after methodology and 11.8% were case series. The types of checklists 27.5% daily objectives, 24.1% patient transfer and 29.3% checklists to reduce or prevent infections associated with the use of medical devices. The context 25% medical ICU, 8% medical-surgical ICU, and 3% trauma ICU. Discussion Although we found articles that concluded favorable initial results for the main objectives, most concluded to extend the studies to verify the impact of the checklists. Conclusion: Checklists are a tool that helps to promote better medical practice, however, there is a lack of literature to support it.2021-10-22 23:55:02: Script de automatizacion de embargos.
