Pathogenicity Levels of Colombian Strains of Candida auris and Brazilian Strains of Candida haemulonii Species Complex in Both Murine and Galleria mellonella Experimental Models

Candida auris and Candida haemulonii complex (C. haemulonii, C. haemulonii var. vulnera and C. duobushaemulonii) are phylogenetically related species that share some physiological features and habits. In the present study, we compared the virulence of these yeast species using two different experime...

In the present study, we compared the virulence of these yeast species using two different experimental models: (i) Galleria mellonella larvae to evaluate the survival rate, fungal burden, histopathology and phagocytosis index and (ii) BALB/c mice to evaluate the survival. In addition, the fungal capacity to form biofilm over an inert surface was analyzed. Our results showed that in both experimental models, the animal survival rate was lower when infected with C. auris strains than the C. haemulonii species complex. The hemocytes of G. mellonella showed a significantly reduced ability to phagocytize the most virulent strains forming the C. haemulonii species complex. Interestingly, for C. auris, it was impossible to measure the phagocytosis index due to a general lysis of the hemocytes. Moreover, it was observed a greater capability of biofilm formation by C. auris compared to C. haemulonii species complex. In conclusion, we observed that C. auris and C. haemulonii complex have different levels of pathogenicity in the experimental models employed in the present study.application/pdfhttps://doi.org/10.3390/jof6030104ISSN: 2309-608Xhttps://repository.urosario.edu.co/handle/10336/26692engEuropean Confederation of Medical Mycology14No. 141Journal of FungiVol. 6Journal of Fungi, ISSN: 2309-608X, Vol.6, No.14 (2020); pp. 1-14https://www.mdpi.com/2309-608X/6/3/104/htmAbierto (Texto Completo)http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2Journal of Fungiinstname:Universidad del Rosarioreponame:Repositorio Institucional EdocURCandida aurisCandida haemulonii species complexVirulenceCandidiasisBiofilmGalleria mellonellaPathogenicity Levels of Colombian Strains of Candida auris and Brazilian Strains of Candida haemulonii Species Complex in Both Murine and Galleria mellonella Experimental ModelsPathogenicity Levels of Colombian Strains of Candida auris and Brazilian Strains of Candida haemulonii Species Complex in Both Murine and Galleria mellonella Experimental ModelsarticleArtículohttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501Muñoz Henao, Julián EstebanRamirez, LauraDias, LucasRivas, LauraRamos, LiviaSantos, L.S.Pelleschi Taborda, CarlosParra-Giraldo, Claudia MORIGINALjof-06-00104.pdfapplication/pdf2733445https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/f30a4114-6a30-4277-b908-fe5ea796ad58/download830554b1a84455195471ea8589f7918fMD51TEXTjof-06-00104.pdf.txtjof-06-00104.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain56854https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/2eb6e1e8-b6aa-45cc-a96f-f2ba78e09b2a/download81df1140690a619fa52dcc55294d8d94MD52THUMBNAILjof-06-00104.pdf.jpgjof-06-00104.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg5015https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/633ed156-633d-4030-bfaa-38af4b8cb2f0/download3f7655c3fdf11538bf5e4a8e5605b1f1MD5310336/26692oai:repository.urosario.edu.co:10336/266922021-06-03 00:49:57.686https://repository.urosario.edu.coRepositorio institucional EdocURedocur@urosario.edu.co
