Chagas disease (Trypanosoma cruzi) and HIV co-infection in Colombia

Chagas disease is a complex zoonotic pathology caused by the kinetoplastid Trypanosoma cruzi. This parasite presents remarkable genetic variability and has been grouped into six discrete typing units (DTUs). The association between the DTUs and clinical outcome remains unknown. This parasite presents remarkable genetic variability and has been grouped into six discrete typing units (DTUs). The association between the DTUs and clinical outcome remains unknown. Chagas disease and co-infection with HIV/AIDS has been reported widely in Brazil and Argentina. Herein, we present the molecular analyses from a Chagas disease patient with HIV/AIDS co-infection in Colombia who presented severe cardiomyopathy, pleural effusion, and central nervous system involvement. A mixed infection by T. cruzi genotypes was detected. We suggest including T. cruzi in the list of opportunistic pathogens for the management of HIV patients in Colombia. The epidemiological implications of this finding are discussed. © 2014 The Authors.application/pdfISSN 1201-9712http://repository.urosario.edu.co/handle/10336/18717enge148 e146International Journal of Infectious DiseasesVol. 26International Journal of Infectious Diseases, ISSN: 1201-9712, Vol. 26 (2014) pp. e146-e148https://reader.elsevier.com/reader/sd/pii/S1201971214014969?token=DCC2D5599A2D2E26D59BBEBC9CD69F3BCA391DBB7D31BBA8C6339B42484B84AFB2A5B66F90EFC428A36FF028AD8F786DAbierto (Texto Completo)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2(2006), PAHO/WHO (Organización Panamericana de la Saludinstname:Universidad del Rosarioreponame:Repositorio Institucional EdocURChagas DiseaseCo-InfectionHivTissue TropismBeta ActinDna 18SGlucoseImmunoglobulin GKinetoplast DnaMeropenemNifurtimoxParasite AntigenProteinPyrimethamine Plus SulfadoxineRecombinant AntigenAcquired Immune Deficiency SyndromeAcute DiseaseAdultAntibiotic TherapyArticleAstheniaAutopsyBrain BiopsyBrain DiseaseBrain EdemaBrain TomographyCase ReportChagas DiseaseColombiaDrug WithdrawalDyspneaEchocardiographyElectrocardiographyFemaleGenotypeHeart Ejection FractionHeart Left Ventricle OverloadHeart Muscle BiopsyHospitalizationHumanHuman TissueImmunoaffinity ChromatographyLumbar PunctureLymphocytic InfiltrationMitral Valve RegurgitationMixed InfectionMyocarditisNeuroimagingNuclear Magnetic Resonance ImagingPericarditisPleura EffusionPleura FluidPolymerase Chain ReactionProtein Cerebrospinal Fluid LevelSomnolenceThoracocentesisThorax PainToxoplasmosisTricuspid Valve RegurgitationTrypanosoma CruziTrypomastigoteWeight ReductionWestern BlottingChagas DiseaseClassificationComplicationGeneticsHuman Immunodeficiency Virus InfectionIsolation And PurificationParasitologyAdultChagas DiseaseCoinfectionColombiaFemaleGenotypeHiv InfectionsHumansTrypanosoma CruziEnfermedad de ChagasInfecciones por VIHTrypanosomiasisChagas disease (Trypanosoma cruzi) and HIV co-infection in ColombiaarticleArtículohttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501Hernández, CarolinaCucunubá, ZulmaParra, EdgarToro, GermánZambrano, PilarRamírez, JuanHernández, CarolinaCucunubá, ZulmaParra, EdgarToro, GermanZambrano, PilarRamírez, Juan DavidORIGINAL122.pdfapplication/pdf499313https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/3179fcb7-695b-4fd8-b009-f22b3938f81e/downloadf236eb28b19374d514243ed6390b85b8MD51TEXT122.pdf.txt122.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain13762https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/8ed051fe-479d-4c44-ab9e-132a7d4c6b84/download66c8bdb298e54dcf0741b60dc88932eaMD52THUMBNAIL122.pdf.jpg122.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg4920https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/9063fb4e-144d-4ff9-bff9-2f5abb5ca60e/download993bac4f17f1cf47aaf56b3e64756037MD5310336/18717oai:repository.urosario.edu.co:10336/187172019-09-19 07:38:03.190837https://repository.urosario.edu.coRepositorio institucional EdocURedocur@urosario.edu.co
