Instead, a new round of competition begins, with legislators as voters and party leaders as candidates. The offices at stake are what we call “mega?seats.” We consider the selection of three different types of mega?seats—cabinet portfolios, seats on directing boards, and permanent committee chairs—in 57 democratic assemblies. If winning parties select the rules by which mega?seats are chosen and those rules affect which parties can attain mega?seats (one important payoff of “winning”), then parties and rules should coevolve in the long run. We find two main patterns relating to legislative party systems and a country's length of experience with democratic governance.application/pdfhttps://doi.org/10.3162/036298006X201760ISSN: 0362-9805EISSN: 1939-9162https://repository.urosario.edu.co/handle/10336/28435engWashington University in St. Louis174No. 2153Legislative Studies QuarterlyVol. 31Legislative Studies Quarterly, ISSN: 0362-9805;EISSN: 1939-9162, Vol. 31, No. 2 (May 2006); pp. 153-174https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.3162/036298006X201760Restringido (Acceso a grupos específicos)http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_16ecLegislative Studies Quarterlyinstname:Universidad del Rosarioreponame:Repositorio Institucional EdocURPoliticalDemocracyElectionsElectoral rulesHow parties create electoral democracy, chapter 2Cómo los partidos crean democracia electoral, capítulo 2articleArtículohttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501Carroll, RoyceCox, Gary W.Pachón Buitrago, Mónica10336/28435oai:repository.urosario.edu.co:10336/284352021-06-03 00:49:48.207https://repository.urosario.edu.coRepositorio institucional EdocURedocur@urosario.edu.co |
