Extortion is often associated with long-standing and well-organised criminal organisations, such as the Italian Mafia and the Japanese Yakuza, given the amount of data and research about these criminal groups and their popularity in contemporary popular culture. Yet, a review of the different extortion practices around the world quickly makes readily available the significant diversity and complexity of the social contexts in which extortion occurs. This chapter provides a brief review of typical dynamics of extortion in different countries around the world. The main goal is, first, to summarily show the persistence and diversity of extortion rackets worldwide and, second, and most important, to contextualise the two cases analysed in the following chapters, by providing some points of contrast, regarding the social conditions of the phenomenon of extortion, as well as their academic accessibility.application/pdfhttps://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-45169-5_2ISBN: 978-3-319-45167-1EISBN: 978-3-319-45169-5https://repository.urosario.edu.co/handle/10336/28706engSpringer International239Social Dimensions of Organised CrimeSocial Dimensions of Organised Crime, ISBN: 978-3-319-45167-1; EISBN: 978-3-319-45169-5, (December, 2016); pp. 9-23https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-319-45169-5_2Restringido (Acceso a grupos específicos)http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_16ecSocial Dimensions of Organised Crimeinstname:Universidad del Rosarioreponame:Repositorio Institucional EdocURCriminal OrganisationCriminal GroupOrganise CrimeUmbrella ConceptHell AngelNational Mafia-Type Organisations: Local Threat, Global ReachOrganizaciones nacionales tipo mafia: amenaza local, alcance globalbookPartParte de librohttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_3248Anzola Pinzón, David EnriqueNeumann, M.Möhring, M.Troitzsch, K.G.10336/28706oai:repository.urosario.edu.co:10336/287062021-07-28 12:00:55.427https://repository.urosario.edu.coRepositorio institucional EdocURedocur@urosario.edu.co
