Plasma exchange therapy for a severe relapse of Devic's disease in a pregnant woman: A case report and concise review

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) or Devic's disease is an autoimmune inflammatory demyelinating condition affecting the central nervous system (CNS). It was initially believed to be a variant of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the discovery of NMO-IgG anti-AQP4 antibodies marked an objective distin...

It was initially believed to be a variant of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the discovery of NMO-IgG anti-AQP4 antibodies marked an objective distinction between these conditions. Treatment of acute attacks is generally based on pulsed steroids, followed by long-term immunosuppression with azathioprine, oral steroids, and rituximab as first-line therapies. Plasma exchange therapy is indicated for steroid-resistant relapses. We describe a case report of a pregnant woman with a severe relapse of Devic's disease, initially misdiagnosed as MS, unresponsive to pulsed steroids, and who underwent plasma exchange therapy safely, with excellent clinical response and with no adverse outcome for the fetus. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.application/pdfhttps://doi.org/10.1016/j.clineuro.2016.07.0043038467https://repository.urosario.edu.co/handle/10336/23689engElsevier B.V.9088Clinical Neurology and NeurosurgeryVol. 148Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery, ISSN:3038467, Vol.148,(2016); pp. 88-90https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-84978898802&doi=10.1016%2fj.clineuro.2016.07.004&partnerID=40&md5=9c16eb4fdeb9f75173cd2e1707625e3cAbierto (Texto Completo)http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2instname:Universidad del Rosarioreponame:Repositorio Institucional EdocURAzathioprineImmunoglobulin gMethylprednisolonePrednisoneAdultAfferent pupillary defectAntibody titerBabinski reflexBlindnessCase reportCervical spinal cordCesarean sectionColombiaCorticosteroid therapyDermatomeDiagnostic errorEclampsiaFemaleFollow upGait disorderHumanHyperreflexiaImmunosuppressive treatmentLeg muscleMedical record reviewMultiple sclerosisMuscle strengthMydriasisMyelooptic neuropathyNuclear magnetic resonance imagingOptic neuritisPapilledemaParaplegiaParesthesiaPhysical examinationPlasmapheresisPreeclampsiaPregnant womanPrimigravidaRelapseReviewSensory dysfunctionThoracic spinal cordTreatment responseVisual acuityWhite matter lesionNeuromyelitis opticaPlasma exchangePregnancyPregnancy complicationsProceduresAdultFemaleHumansNeuromyelitis opticaPlasma exchangePregnancyPregnancy complicationsDevic's diseaseNeuromyelitis opticaPlasma exchangePregnancyPlasma exchange therapy for a severe relapse of Devic's disease in a pregnant woman: A case report and concise reviewarticleArtículohttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501Tabares, Jonathan RubioGonzalez, Pablo Felipe Amaya10336/23689oai:repository.urosario.edu.co:10336/236892022-05-02 07:37:21.200891https://repository.urosario.edu.coRepositorio institucional EdocURedocur@urosario.edu.co
