The objective of this study was therefore to determine the lifetime prevalence of and risk factors for occupational injuries among working students (10-17 years old) in Cusco Province. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted at five public night schools. 375 students (response 91.5%) completed an interview-based questionnaire on socio-demographics, work-related factors, and lifetime prevalence of occupational injuries. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to estimate risk factors for different types and causes of occupational injuries. Results: Falls (11%), car accidents (9%) and physical violence (3%) were common causes of injuries in this population. Severe injuries (fractures, luxation or amputations) were reported by 3% of the population. A high daily income (?20 PEN, ?15 USD) was a statistically significant predictor for injuries caused by falls [OR 2.8; 95% CI 1.2-6.5] and physical violence at work [12.1; 1.3-115.9] whereas children born in Cusco and those working in the service sector were at higher risk of injuries caused by car accidents [3.7; 1.5-9.3 and 4.2; 1.2-15.3]. Conclusions: Occupational accidents among child workers attending public night schools are common in Cusco with a lifetime prevalence of 3% for severe injuries. High income seems to convince child laborers to accept poor working conditions. © 2014 Schlick et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.application/pdfhttps://doi.org/10.1186/1471-2458-14-76614712458https://repository.urosario.edu.co/handle/10336/23582engBioMed Central Ltd.No. 1BMC Public HealthVol. 14BMC Public Health, ISSN:14712458, Vol.14, No.1 (2014)https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-84904853075&doi=10.1186%2f1471-2458-14-766&partnerID=40&md5=feebf61e3d446db4fe74d1c86889d620Abierto (Texto Completo)http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2instname:Universidad del Rosarioreponame:Repositorio Institucional EdocURAdolescentAge distributionChildCluster analysisCross-sectional studyEmploymentFemaleHumanMaleOccupational accidentOccupational injuriesPeruPrevalenceQuestionnaireRisk factorStatistics and numerical dataAdolescentAge distributionChildCluster analysisCross-sectional studiesEmploymentFemaleHumansMaleOccupational injuriesPeruPrevalenceQuestionnairesRisk factorsChild laborCuscoOccupational injuriesPerúoccupationalAccidentsOccupational injuries among children and adolescents in Cusco Province: A cross-sectional studyarticleArtículohttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501Schlick, CorneliaJoachin, ManuelaBriceño Ayala, LeonardoMoraga, DanielRadon, KatjaORIGINAL1471-2458-14-766.pdfapplication/pdf258584https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/6091d172-97f3-4c5d-bb81-a2f388a15ff4/download2e9228ee7cf44ccf03dbb0d629a40b96MD51TEXT1471-2458-14-766.pdf.txt1471-2458-14-766.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain34616https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/05051460-6867-42e2-8cb6-784bafcd8b7f/download6986aa517a8cea661bf18a3c75a1471fMD52THUMBNAIL1471-2458-14-766.pdf.jpg1471-2458-14-766.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg4518https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/661a12f9-179a-4ea0-8f5f-b334623f8b60/download202bab461ecb252f76ac1bd70329e702MD5310336/23582oai:repository.urosario.edu.co:10336/235822022-05-02 07:37:17.81622https://repository.urosario.edu.coRepositorio institucional EdocURedocur@urosario.edu.co |
