I discuss the conceptual evolution of the term from the Third World narrative, interpreting the literature as an implicit rejection of myopic ontologies relying on economic, cultural, or political hierarchies. I then suggest connecting the terminology to the theory of functional differentiation. By avoiding forms inherited from classical social theory, the Global South can be conceptualized in a more productive way that is better attuned to contemporary theoretical discussions. © The Author(s) 2018.application/pdfhttps://doi.org/10.1177/03043754188111913043754https://repository.urosario.edu.co/handle/10336/24052engSAGE Publications Inc.80No. 259AlternativesVol. 43Alternatives, ISSN:3043754, Vol.43, No.2 (2018); pp. 59-80https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-85058666280&doi=10.1177%2f0304375418811191&partnerID=40&md5=f1d7610438686b164f467ef22f20fce0Abierto (Texto Completo)http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2instname:Universidad del Rosarioreponame:Repositorio Institucional EdocURDifferentiation theoryGlobal southIr theoryPolitical geographyThird worldDifferentiation Theory and the Global South as a Metageography of International RelationsarticleArtículohttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501Kleinschmidt J.10336/24052oai:repository.urosario.edu.co:10336/240522022-05-02 07:37:21.335902https://repository.urosario.edu.coRepositorio institucional EdocURedocur@urosario.edu.co
