Its activities and evolution cannot be understood unless they are analyzed within the context of the Bourbon sanitary reforms. It was precisely at that time when these reforms were being implemented in Nueva Granada. One of the goals of the reforms was to improve the health of the population in order to discipline the vassals, to promote the growth of the workforce and to increase the Crown's wealth. The text reviews different aspects of the institution, and how it operated. It examines its budget, its expenses, and the dynamics of the hospital population and of its employees. In doing so, it intends to explain what the hospital offered to the city's various social groups.application/pdf2104466https://repository.urosario.edu.co/handle/10336/23044eng236No. 1203AsclepioVol. 60Asclepio, ISSN:2104466, Vol.60, No.1 (2008); pp. 203-236https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-70449732618&partnerID=40&md5=234810ee65ec338436b1218ee884578cAbierto (Texto Completo)http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2instname:Universidad del Rosarioreponame:Repositorio Institucional EdocURArticleCaribbean islandsCentral americaEconomicsEducationEthnic and racial groupsEthnologyGovernmentHealth care policyHistoryHospitalHumanPatientPhysicianPolitical systemPovertyPsychological aspectPublic healthSanitationSocial classSocioeconomicsSoldierSpainCaribbean regionColonialismHealth care reformHistory, 18th centuryHospitalsHumansLocal governmentMilitary personnelPatientsPhysiciansPopulation groupsPoverty areasPublic healthSanitationSocial classSocioeconomic factorsSpainWest indies18th centuryCartagena de indiasHospitals in the spanish colonyMedicine in spanish americaNueva granadaMilitary, sailors and the sick poor.
