Risk Factors Associated with Different Stages of Atherosclerosis in Colombian Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with an increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Since atherosclerosis development is a gradual process of damage inside the artery wall, and the phenotype–genotype correlation of complex diseases may vary depending on ethnicity, we sought to inve...

Since atherosclerosis development is a gradual process of damage inside the artery wall, and the phenotype–genotype correlation of complex diseases may vary depending on ethnicity, we sought to investigate the influence of clinical features, routine inflammatory markers, and the genetic component of RA on different stages of atherosclerosis in northwestern Colombian patients with RA. Methods A group of 140 patients with RA were enrolled in this study. All patients underwent a noninvasive evaluation of endothelial function by flow-mediated vasodilation (FMV) and an assessment of carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) by high-resolution B-mode ultrasonography. The patients were classified into 3 categories: endothelial dysfunction (FMV <5%), increased IMT (0.91-1.29 mm), and plaque (IMT >1.30 mm). The risk of being in each category was assessed by investigating traditional and nontraditional cardiovascular risk factors. For each stage of atherosclerosis development, we searched for nontraditional risk factors that were significantly associated with the stage after adjusting for traditional risk factors and current age.application/pdfhttps://doi.org/10.1016/j.semarthrit.2008.01.019ISSN: 0049-0172EISSN: 1532-866Xhttps://repository.urosario.edu.co/handle/10336/26125engElsevier82No. 271Seminars in Arthritis and RheumatismVol. 38Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism, ISSN: 0049-0172 ; EISSN: 1532-866X, Vol.38, No.2 (October, 2008); pp.71-82https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0049017208000437?via%3DihubAbierto (Texto Completo)http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatisminstname:Universidad del Rosarioreponame:Repositorio Institucional EdocURAdultArthritisRheumatoidCarotid Artery DiseasesColombiaEndotheliumVascularFemaleHumansMaleMiddle AgedRheumatoid FactorRisk AssessmentRisk FactorsSeverity of Illness IndexTunica IntimaTunica MediaUltrasonographyRisk Factors Associated with Different Stages of Atherosclerosis in Colombian Patients with Rheumatoid ArthritisFactores de riesgo asociados con diferentes etapas de la aterosclerosis en pacientes colombianos con artritis reumatoidearticleArtículohttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501Rojas-Villarraga, AdrianaOrtega-Hernandez, Oscar-DaniloGomez, Luis F.Pardo, Aryce L.Arango-Ferreira, CamilaHincapie, Maria-EugeniaBetancur, Juan F.Pineda-Tamayo, RicardoDiaz, Francisco J.Anaya, Juan-ManuelLópez Guzmán, SilviaORIGINAL1-s2-0-S0049017208000437-main.pdfapplication/pdf193273https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/2c2c880f-6472-4d81-b4b2-05be619fe759/download3e33e6466c9a4fa62a3a5817641b1a29MD51TEXT1-s2-0-S0049017208000437-main.pdf.txt1-s2-0-S0049017208000437-main.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain66772https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/1af87492-58fa-4ed3-bd84-62eb9ec34933/downloadf3e509513f2ab6fd96ca1e5cbee2c291MD52THUMBNAIL1-s2-0-S0049017208000437-main.pdf.jpg1-s2-0-S0049017208000437-main.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg4635https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/c80375bc-cb62-40cc-b36e-3277af3c87a6/download83853bf1e47c6b2c7244cea669347524MD5310336/26125oai:repository.urosario.edu.co:10336/261252021-08-13 23:01:25.979https://repository.urosario.edu.coRepositorio institucional EdocURedocur@urosario.edu.co
