Description
Summary:The demanding international market for pork in the global context offers great opportunities for the benefit of the export of pork from countries with agricultural potential. However, developing countries, as in the case of Colombia, face major challenges, which can become final hurdles for pig production systems on a small scale are characterized by deficiencies that make them highly vulnerable. The dynamics of international market have shown that countries with high potential are those who benefit when establishing bilateral trade agreements and end increased their capital. Furthermore, the Colombian dependency on imported inputs for feed manufacturing increases production costs and reduces the chances of competing with the market price. Finally, technological appropriation of pig production is poor, so production rates do not reach the minimum required under competitiveness. The aim of this article is to highlight the vulnerability of production systems on a small scale against the establishment of free trade agreements with countries with high potential and development.
