description	La Enfermedad Renal Crónica (ERC), afecta a felinos y caninos principalmente de edad avanzada y se caracteriza por la hipofunción renal, que en su progresión en el tiempo conlleva a anormalidades persistentes en su mayoría irreversibles (azotemia e incapacidad de concentración de la orina), generando en el organismo del paciente, un síndrome tóxico polisistémico que no solamente altera la eficacia de los riñones en cuanto a su función, sino que afecta de manera integrada a otros sistemas. La importancia de la enfermedad en la clínica de pequeños animales, radica en una prevalencia mundial que afecta entre el 0.5 a 1.5% de caninos y entre 1 y 3% a felinos; con mortalidades del 5% en caninos y del 3% en felinos. Para lo que se hace necesario, comprender cuales pueden ser los factores de riesgo que pueden evidenciar o indicar que el paciente podrá desarrollar una ERC, cuáles son las alteraciones clínicas observables en un paciente que ha comenzado a tener fallas en la funcionabilidad de sus nefronas y las pruebas diagnósticas necesarias para evidenciar de manera efectiva, que las alteraciones y sintomatología están asociadas con cambios en la función renal, contribuyendo así, a la detección precoz de la enfermedad y la instauración de un protocolo terapéutico adecuado, que contribuya a la compensación en las variaciones presentes y así, poder brindar al paciente calidad de vida y un tiempo mayor de sobrevivencia.

La importancia de la enfermedad en la clínica de pequeños animales, radica en una prevalencia mundial que afecta entre el 0.5 a 1.5% de caninos y entre 1 y 3% a felinos; con mortalidades del 5% en caninos y del 3% en felinos. Para lo que se hace necesario, comprender cuales pueden ser los factores de riesgo que pueden evidenciar o indicar que el paciente podrá desarrollar una ERC, cuáles son las alteraciones clínicas observables en un paciente que ha comenzado a tener fallas en la funcionabilidad de sus nefronas y las pruebas diagnósticas necesarias para evidenciar de manera efectiva, que las alteraciones y sintomatología están asociadas con cambios en la función renal, contribuyendo así, a la detección precoz de la enfermedad y la instauración de un protocolo terapéutico adecuado, que contribuya a la compensación en las variaciones presentes y así, poder brindar al paciente calidad de vida y un tiempo mayor de sobrevivencia.Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects cats and dogs mainly of advanced age and is characterized by renal hypofunction, which in its progression over time leads to persistent abnormalities mostly irreversible (azotemia and inability to concentrate urine) , generating in the patient's organism, a polysystemic toxic syndrome that not only alters the effectiveness of the kidneys in terms of function, but also affects other systems in an integrated manner. The importance of the disease in the clinic of small animals, lies in a worldwide prevalence that affects between 0.5 to 1.5% of canines and between 1 and 3% to felines; with mortalities of 5% in dogs and 3% in cats.
