Introduction: This research describes the family dynamics of patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in the municipality of Barrancabermeja (Colombia) in order to approach the state of the family system and how it is affected by this diagnosis. Aim: To describe family structure before and after the diagnosis based on the family genogram, to define family dynamics before and after the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, and to identify personal, family, social and economic impacts on each family group. Materials and methods: Qualitative research; a sample of nine participating families was completed to collect information for the family genogram. Results: The impact of this disease on families is directly related to the stage the patient is on and the symptoms associated with it. As the disease progresses, the subject shows increased dependence due to deterioration of his cognitive and physical functions. Thus, the family provides more care to the patient, which involves great effort, time, adaptation in the lifestyles of family members and reorganization of the family unit. Conclusions: The diagnosis of the disease produces structural and functional changes that alter family dynamics, which are closely related to personal and family life cycles, the degree of deterioration and thestage the patient is on. Family typology and affective bonds established before the diagnosis are decisive for coping with situations that cause risis and instability within the nucleus and to the primary caregiver. |

Objetivos: describir la estructura familiar antes y después del diagnóstico a partir del genograma familiar; definir la dinámica familiar antes y después del diagnóstico de enfermedad de Alzheimer e identificar las afecciones en las dimensiones personal, familiar, social y económica en cada grupo familiar. Metodología: investigación cualitativa, se concretó una muestra de nueve familias participantes para obtener información para la elaboración del genograma familiar. Resultados: el impacto de esta enfermedad en las familias está relacionado directamente con la etapa en la que se encuentra el paciente y los síntomas asociados a la misma. A medida que la enfermedad avanza, el sujeto presenta aumento en su dependencia debido al deterioro en sus funciones cognitivas y físicas. Por tal razón, la familia le brinda un mayor cuidado al paciente generando gran esfuerzo, tiempo, adaptación en los estilos de vida de los miembros del sistema y reorganización de la unidad familiar. Conclusiones: el diagnóstico de la enfermedad genera cambios estructurales y funcionales que alteran la dinámica familiar, los cuales están estrechamente relacionados con el ciclo vital personal y familiar, el grado de deterioro y el estadio en que se encuentra el paciente. La tipología familiar y los vínculos afectivos establecidos antes del diagnóstico son determinantes para el afrontamiento de situaciones que generan crisis e inestabilidad dentro del núcleo, así como al cuidador primario.Introdução: esta pesquisa descreve a dinâmica familiar de pacientes diagnosticados com a doença de Alzheimer no município de Barrancabermeja, Colômbia, com a finalidade de se aproximar do estado do sistema familiar e seu efeito diante desse diagnóstico. Objetivos: descrever a estrutura familiar antes e depois do diagnóstico a partir do genograma familiar; definir a dinâmica familiar antes e depois do diagnóstico da doença de Alzheimer e identificar os efeitos na dimensão pessoal, familiar, social e econômica em cada grupo familiar. Metodologia: pesquisa qualitativa, conformou-se uma amostra de nove famílias participantes para obter informações para a elaboração do genograma familiar. Resultados: o impacto dessa doença nas famílias está diretamente relacionado ao estágio em que o paciente está e aos sintomas associados a ela. Conforme a doença avança, o indivíduo aumenta sua dependência devido à deterioração de suas funções cognitivas e físicas. Por isso, a família dá maior cuidado ao paciente, gerando grande esforço, tempo, adaptação nos estilos de vida dos membros do sistema e reorganização da unidade familiar. Conclusões: o diagnóstico da doença gera mudanças estruturais e funcionais que alteram a dinâmica familiar, que estão intimamente relacionadas ao ciclo de vida pessoal e familiar, grau de deterioração e estágio do paciente.
