description Introduction: Toothpaste and mouthwash are obviously the most used means offluoride application by the general population. Objective: To determine fluoride concentrations in toothpaste and mouthwash for children sold in the supermarkets of Bogota, Colombia, and to verify if said values are consistent with the values informed by the manufacturer.Material and Methods: 17 toothpastes and 4 mouthwashes were evaluated. The total amount of fluoride (ft) and of ionic fluoride (fi) was evaluated; and in the toothpaste that contained sodium monofluorophosphate, the total soluble fluoride (fst) was also evaluated. The fi was evaluated in all mouthwash. A specific fluoride electrode was used attached to an ion analyzer, previously calibrated with fluoride standards after adding tisab ii as buffer solutions. A descriptive statistical analysis was performed. Results: 18% of toothpastes presented values between 12, 5 and 13, 9% under the amount expected for ft. One toothpaste presented 77% offi values under the expected amount, which was the same in fst values of 48, 7% underneath the expected. One of the mouthwash received a fi value of 7% above the expected. Conclusion: Most of the studied toothpastes and mouthwash presented values of ft and fi according to the information given by their manufacturers. However, inconsistencies were found in the fluoride concentration in some products, which may affect their anti-cavity effect

Objetivo: determinar las concentraciones de flúor en las cremas dentales y enjuagues bucales para niños, vendidos en los supermercados de la ciudad de Bogotá y verificar si estos valores estaban consistentes con los informados por los fabricantes. Materiales y Métodos: fueron encontradas 17 cremas dentales y 4 enjuagues bucales. En todas las cremas dentales fue evaluado el flúor total (FT) y flúor iónico (FI); en las que contenían Monofluorofosfato de Sodio adicionalmente se evaluó el flúor soluble total (FST). En los enjuagues bucales se evaluó flúor iónico (FI). Para los análisis fue usado un electrodo específico de flúor acoplado a un analizador de iones, calibrado previamente con padrones de flúor después de adicionar TISAB II como solución tampón. Se realizó un análisis estadístico descriptivo de los datos. Resultados: el 18% de las cremas dentales presento valores entre 12,46 a 13,93% por debajo del valor esperado para el FT. Para el FI una presento valores del 77% menos de lo esperado, que fue la misma con valores en FST del 48,7% menor a lo esperado. Uno de los enjuagues bucales obtuvo un valor de FI 7% mayor a lo esperado. Conclusión: la mayoría de las cremas dentales y enjuagues bucales analizados presentan valores de FT y FI de acuerdo a la información presentada por los fabricantes. Sin embargo, se observó inconsistencia en la concentración de flúor en algunos productos que puede afectar su efecto anticaries.Introdução: os cremes dentais e os enxaguantes bucais são meios de aplicação de flúor mais empregados pela população. Objetivo: determinar as concentrações de flúor nos cremes dentais e nos enxaguantes bucais para crianças vendidos nos supermercados de Bogotá, Colômbia, e verificar se esses valores são consistentes com os indicados pelos fabricantes.Materiais e métodos: foram incluídos 17 cremes dentais e quatro enxaguantes bucais. Em todos os cremes dentais foi avaliado o flúor total (ft) e flúor iónico (fi); nos que continham fluoreto de sódio também foi avaliado o flúor solúvel total (fst). Nos enxaguantes bucais foi avaliado o fi. Para as analises, foi utilizado um eletrodo específico de flúor unido a um analisador de íons, calibrado previamente com padrões de flúor depois de adicionar tisab ii como solução tampa. Uma análise estatística descritiva foi realizada. Resultados: 18 % dos cremes dentais apresentou valores entre 12,5 e 13,9 % por debaixo do esperado para o ft. Para o fi um creme dental apresentou valores de 77 % por deixo do esperado, que foi o mesmo com valores em fst de 48,7 % por debaixo do esperado. Um dos enxaguantes bucais obteve um valor de fi 7 % superior ao esperado. Conclusão: a maioria dos cremes dentais e enxaguantes bucais analisados apresenta valores de ft e de fi correspondentes à informação oferecida pelos fabricantes.
