description La peritonitis infecciosa felina (PIF) es una enfermedad misteriosa y letal de los gatos. El agente causal, el coronavirus felino (FCoV), está presente en la mayoría de las poblaciones felinas, aunque la enfermedad es de naturaleza esporádica. Las mutaciones en el virus combinadas con una respuesta inmune inapropiada al FCoV contribuyen al desarrollo de la PIF. El diagnóstico puede ser un desafío porque los signos pueden ser vagos, los parámetros de patología clínica son inespecíficos y el estándar de oro para el diagnóstico es invasivo: histopatología del tejido afectado. En cuanto al tratamiento aún no se cuenta con medicamentos efectivos contra el virus, se están desarrollando nueva tendencia de tratamiento los cuales hasta el momento han arrojado resultados favorables, pero aún se necesitan más estudios al respecto.

The causative agent, feline coronavirus (FCoV), is ubiquitous in most feline populations, although the disease is sporadic in nature. Mutations in the infectious virus combined with an inappropriate immune response to FCoV contribute to the development of PIF. Diagnosis can be challenging because the signs may be vague, clinical pathology parameters are nonspecific, and the gold standard for diagnosis is invasive: histopathology of the affected tissue.
