(1) Ese crecimiento hace inviable la formación médica basada exclusivamente en modelos de aula presencial e implican un gran compromiso por parte de los estudiantes. En odontología, fue introducido en 1970 y desde su inicio muchos investigadores han intentado generar nuevas herramientas o diseños que respondan a las exigencias que demanda la nueva población estudiantil. Siguiendo esta línea, uno de los objetivos de la educación dental digital es buscar favorecer espacios de formación apoyándose en las Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación –TIC y así promover nuevas técnicas de aprendizaje. En una investigación realizada por Blanco y col. en la Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia, Facultad de Odontología Sede Bogotá, se evaluó la utilización de videoconferencias sincrónicas como método de aprendizaje en estudiantes de posgrado de ortodoncia en la cátedra de Anomalías Dentomaxilares. Blanco y col. obtuvieron un resultado positivo frente a la utilización de este método de aprendizaje, aclarando que debe ser un método que complemente las clases magistrales. Otro estudio realizado por McCann, y col., se evaluó la preferencia entre los modelos presenciales y aquellos basados en TICs en la Universidad de Baylor el cual mostró que ambos son complementarios, gracias a la sinergia de sus potenciales, entre las que se incluyen el uso pedagógico de las TICs, la conveniencia de los estudiantes, la flexibilidad horaria, la facilidad de la comunicación entre el profesor y los alumnos, el conocimiento colectivo, el fácil acceso y el mejoramiento continuo; estas son algunas de las ventajas en el uso de e-learning.
