description El tétano es una enfermedad no contagiosa, resultante de una intoxicación del sistema nervioso central por la neurotoxina del Clostridium tetani, que es producida durante su crecimiento vegetativo en el cuerpo del hospedero, afecta muchas especies animales en particular se revisará la afectación en equinos. Esta patología se caracteriza clínicamente por hiperestesia y contracciones persistentes de la musculatura, sin pérdida de la conciencia. Para que ocurra la infección, una herida (principalmente las punzantes y profundas) debe estar contaminada con esporas de C. tetani. La enfermedad se adquiere de forma directa por contacto entre el material contaminado con dichas esporas. El diagnó-stico se realiza con base en los signos clínicos que presenta el animal (espasmos musculares y antecedentes de una herida contaminada), los cuales rara vez se confunden con otras enfermedades.
