La pericoronitis se describe como una infección de los tejidos blandos que rodean la corona de un diente parcialmente impactado, principalmente asociado a los terceros molares mandibulares; la cual se presenta con inusitada frecuencia; generalmente en pacientes jóvenes. Su aparición puede ser espontánea o tras episodios de infección crónicas. El propósito de este estudio es identificar cual es la prevalencia de pericoronitis en pacientes que asisten a consulta particular en la ciudad de Medellín. Materiales y métodos: La muestra de este estudio estuvo conformada por 314 pacientes atendidos en consulta privada durante el año 2008; los cuales asistieron para cirugía de terceros molares mandibulares con radiografía panorámica. Las Exodoncia y la clasificación de los terceros molares mandibulares fueron realizadas por un cirujano maxilofacial. Resultados y conclusiones En el año en que se realizo nuestro estudio se pudo determinar que según la clasificación de Winter la posición mas frecuente fue la vertical; con relación al sexo la pericoronitis se presento con mayor frecuencia en el sexo masculino. En cuanto a la edad la pericoronitis se presento con más frecuencia en pacientes entre los 19 y 25 años. |

Its appearance may be spontaneous or after episodes of chronic infection. The purpose of this study is to identify the prevalence of pericoronitis in patients attending a consultation in particular the city of Medellin. Materials and methods: The study sample consisted of 314 patients treated in private practice during 2008, which attended to mandibular third molar surgery with panoramic radiography. The extraction and classification of mandibular third molars were performed by a maxillofacial surgeon. Results and conclusions In the year of our study was done it was determined that according to the classification of the Winter was the most frequent position vertically with respect to the sex pericoronitis occurs most often in males.
