La dirofilariasis cardiopulmonar conocida como enfermedad del gusano del corazón es una enfermedad parasitaria de importancia clínica en perros causada por la especie Dirofilaria immitis, afecta a caninos y felinos domésticos y salvajes, así como a la población humana. En la presente revisión, buscamos hablar de los métodos diagnósticos indicados para Dirofilaria, ya que, al pertenecer a una zona de clima caliente, la recurrencia de casos es frecuente. Un diagnóstico altamente sensible y específico de D. immitis que incluya la medición de la capacidad de carga parasitaria, ayuda a detener la progresión de la enfermedad y es vital para instaurar un tratamiento adecuado, previniendo así, los posibles efectos adversos que esta puede acarrear. Complementariamente, se describe un caso clínico presentado en las instalaciones de la clínica de pequeños animales de la Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia con visualización de filariasis linfática mediante frotis sanguíneo, con resolución favorable para el canino. |

En la presente revisión, buscamos hablar de los métodos diagnósticos indicados para Dirofilaria, ya que, al pertenecer a una zona de clima caliente, la recurrencia de casos es frecuente. Un diagnóstico altamente sensible y específico de D. immitis que incluya la medición de la capacidad de carga parasitaria, ayuda a detener la progresión de la enfermedad y es vital para instaurar un tratamiento adecuado, previniendo así, los posibles efectos adversos que esta puede acarrear. Complementariamente, se describe un caso clínico presentado en las instalaciones de la clínica de pequeños animales de la Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia con visualización de filariasis linfática mediante frotis sanguíneo, con resolución favorable para el canino.Cardiopulmonary dirofilariasis known as heartworm disease is a parasitic disease of clinical importance in dogs caused by the species Dirofilaria immitis, affecting domestic and wild canines and felines, as well as the human population. In the present review, we seek to discuss the diagnostic methods indicated for Dirofilaria, since, belonging to a hot climate zone, the recurrence of cases is frequent. A highly sensitive and specific diagnosis of D. immitis, including the measurement of the parasite load capacity, helps to stop the progression of the disease and is vital to establish an adequate treatment, thus preventing the possible adverse effects of the disease.
